The puppies turn two weeks old today, and they are all doing great! I don't have time to post, but here are some pictures... they are getting so big and are so sweet!

Oakley's family (well most of her family since Paul was out of town) came to visit her and the pups today. After humoring me with taking their shoes off and getting the Purell treatment, they all pet the puppies and cuddled them with Oakley watching - she was so happy to see them!!! Her human daughter found another use for the pig rails - a perfect seat for a two-year-old! Thanks to Erin for taking head pictures since I don't have extra hands - will post more later. It's snowing in Raleigh right now, and I'm enjoying the snow. Just wish the pups were old enough to be outside playing in it, too! I cannot get over how cuddly these puppies are - they snuggle and love to be really close. As you can see from the pictures below, they really like to snuggle by my neck - Orange boy is more of a neck wrap than anything - he likes to get right up at the back of my neck and fall asleep. So cute! Even Waldo Pepper wants to cuddle after he's been all over the human jungle-gym (i.e., me). These little guys are so sweet and so much fun. All the puppies had their nails done again today. For those that know me, I am kind of insane about nails (I get that from Melissa, my mentor in the breed and Keygan's owner). For example, Grainger gets his nails done every 3-5 days. Puppies have had them done twice - and all are pretty good about it so far. Both Keygan and Oakley are very sensitive about their feet, so I am playing with the puppies' feet every day and hopefully they will be completely used to having their feet and nails messed with by the time they go to their homes. NOTE/HINT: I hope their future homes will keep their nails nice and short, too! Enjoy the pictures! I get the real thing every day - are you jealous? Heh. Melissa J - these pictures of their tails are just for you! On December 1, Waldo stood up for a few seconds. On December 2, Waldo started walking - like a little drunk man. Here's a video - link to the video is below. On the same day, Blue and Orange started standing and taking a couple of steps. The rest of them are all standing up for a few moments at a time. Will post more pictures and updates a bit later - I'm enjoying my last full day of being at home with the puppies on a weekday.

Pups are 9 days old today and continue to all be doing really well. For those of you who are not familiar with whelping boxes, the little shelves that go around the inside - about 3-4 inches high - are called pig rails. Pig rails are small railings that stick out and provide a place for newborn and young puppies to roll to get out of the way of their mom in case she accidently lays on them. Pig rails can often save a puppy’s life and prevent the mother from smothering the puppy accidentally. For Oakley, she's very careful when laying down around them, but she has devised her own use for the pig rails.... Pig Rails Oakley has various uses for the pig rails. They often give her a head rest when she's sleeping or nursing puppies. When she was whelping the puppies, she would sit on the rail for leverage when pushing. But (pun intended), her one use for the pig rails that I wish she wouldn't do is that she sits on and leans on them during the night. She'll put her whole side on the rail and lean against it - causing a creaking noise on and off all night long. I'd like to think she has no idea how it keeps me awake or how it reminds me of nails on a chalkboard, but I wouldn't blame her for getting even with me for breeding her. Even though her girlish figure is back - except for the milk, of course - she is subject to nursing six very active puppies, staying inside most of the time - no romping around outside with her human kids and no cat chasing - and frankly, she eats puppy poop and encourages the puppies to pee. So, her life is not so glamorous at the moment. I guess I can't complain too much about creaking noises and her awful breath. Barking Well, I have identified the barker. Orange and Green were wrongly accused - it's the girl, River. She has started little yips in her sleep, but she will really BARK (in a puppy pitch, of course) if she gets turned around or if she wants Oakley. There is no question that it is, in fact, a bark. And, it does get Oakley's attention AND mine. She will likely be a talker just like Oakley. I wonder if she will grin like Oakley, too. New pictures from today... enjoy! |
